Home:The Basic School Eastern Consortia is housed at Virginia Tech, represents the original school-based practitioners who were trained and by Ernest L. Boyer, founder of the Basic School philosophy and practice. These educators in turn have trained and welcomed hundreds of their colleagues into the work of the Basic School Network. Practitioners engaged in implementing and assisting others with the Basic School Network concepts are rapidly increasing in number. The Basic School was the vision of Ernest Boyer as outlined in his book "The Basic School: A Community of Learning" which was published in 1995 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The book is the outgrowth of Boyer's life work of research at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The original network was organized in 1994 with 12 demonstration schools. Today, the Eastern Consortia Network numbers 28 actively engaged schools as well as 3 individual members. The Network currently includes a host of diverse schools--public urban and suburban sites, sectarian institutions, charter schools, and American Overseas schools. The Network has transformed from a small cohort of schools to a closely coordinated group of national Regional Centers to which member schools are attached. Regional Centers work together to offer a consistent array of services and training institutes to interested schools and districts across the nation and abroad. Membership is open to all interested schools, districts, and individuals through the Basic School Network Eastern Consortia or from other regional centers located around the country.
