Laura Welfare

Dr. Laura E. Welfare is an associate professor of education specializing in Counselor Education. A licensed professional counselor and approved clinical supervisor, she earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has authored and coauthored more than 20 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and scholarly instruments. She has also contributed greatly to the field by presenting at many state, regional, and national conferences. Dr. Welfare has received grants and awards in recognition of her research and teaching. Her contributions through research, teaching, and service enrich the Virginia Tech School of Education community.

Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Welfare worked as a counselor in clinical mental health and school settings with children, adolescents, and adults.  Her research interests include counselor cognitive development, cultural competencies, ethics in counselor education, and medical education pedagogy.

Dr. Welfare’s research interests include counselor cognitive development, evidence-based practices in counselor education and supervision, supervisor development, and counseling assessment. Recent publications in the Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Academic Ethics, Journal for Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal of Humanistic Counseling, The Clinical Supervisor, and Counselor Education and Supervision demonstrate dedication to her research interests and to the field. Her involvement in grant-funded projects also exemplifies commitment to the field. Her research expertise informs the courses that she teaches, such as courses on group counseling, supervision, and diagnosis in counseling.
