The Doctor of Philosophy degree consists of a minimum of 90 hours of graduate study oriented to developing expertise in investigative methods and evidence analysis and focused studies in a scholarly area of interest such as multimedia learning, motivation, school learning, and other issues involving learning in applied settings such as classrooms. The Doctor of Philosophy program is tailored to each student in order to provide the best experience and preparation. All students have opportunities to teach educational psychology, to participate in ongoing research with faculty, and to enter into an active community of scholars.

Applying to the Ph.D. Degree Program

We begin reviewing applications for Fall admission to the program beginning in February. To ensure that your application is given full consideration, please have your application completed by the end of January. We only accept students for the Fall semester; however, it is possible to enroll in courses the summer prior to the Fall semester if you get approval from the program.

Applications are completed through the Graduate School website (use the "Admissions" link in the upper-left corner of the Graduate School website).

To be considered for the doctoral program in Educational Psychology, a student must:

  • Possess a master's degree in education, psychology, or another closely related degree
  • Have completed the GRE General Test (that includes verbal reading, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing). There is no minimum GRE score requirement for acceptance. Instead, the GREs are considered as part of the entire portfolio of the student's application.

  • Qualify for admission to the Graduate School
  • Submit 3 letters of reference
  • Submit a current vita
  • Submit a writing sample of scholarly work as part of the graduate school application; or if that is not possible, email it to Dr. Brett Jones
