Areas of Specialization: Psychometrics, Item Response Theory, Instrument Development, Validity Studies, Achievement Testing, Measurement of Attitudes, Evaluation

Dr. Wolfe’s research focuses on psychometrics, particularly as it relates to applications of item response models to complex and innovative measurement contexts. His work involves extensive use of polytomous, multifaceted, and multidimensional Rasch models. He applies these models in projects involving instrument development and validation studies, particularly in the areas of achievement testing in education, attitudinal measurement in the behavioral sciences, and program evaluation. Dr. Wolfe’s recent research projects have focused on topics such as the comparability of computer and paper instruments, development of statistical indicators and cognitive models of rater effects in performance assessments in education, and the development of guidelines for conducting instrument validation studies. Dr. Wolfe teaches courses in measurement and statistics. Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Tech, Dr. Wolfe was a faculty member at Michigan State University and at the University of Florida. He also received a post-doctoral fellowship at Educational Testing Service, and he worked at American College Testing prior to completing his Ph.D. at the University of California.
