English Education

Admissions

To be eligible for regular admission status, applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (last 60 hours of coursework) and a B.A. in English or the state-required equivalent (36 semester hours beyond freshman English). Transcript reviews of applicants with English degrees from other colleges should provide evidence that the programs meet specific content requirements; otherwise, candidates will need to take additional course work as part of the licensure program.

Prospective candidates should:

  1. Register for and pass the Praxis I and Praxis II tests.  Passing scores on both tests are required for admission into the program.  Students can pass out of the Praxis I exam with a state-approved SAT or ACT score.
  2. Register for and pass the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA).
  3. Submit an application to the Graduate School at Virginia Tech.
  4. Submit the English Education Program Application and complete the English Education Requirements Checklist. (The application file was last updated 22 September 2009. Please note for November 2009 applications.)
  5. Submit three letters of reference that speak to your academic ability and teaching potential.  Competitive applicants typically submit references speaking to their experiences when working with adolescents, and references speaking to their academic talents, performance and interests as they relate to the study of literature, writing, etc. These should be submitted to the program, not the Graduate School.

Applications for the MAED program are due by November 1.

Virginia Tech students should apply in the fall term of the senior year.  If eligible, English majors may apply for dual status admission during the last semester of their undergraduate coursework, usually the second semester of their senior year.

Applications from candidates who have already completed an undergraduate degree or who apply from other universities will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Space in the program is limited and acceptance is competitive.  Once application materials have been reviewed, eligible applicants will be contacted for an interview.
