Graduation Requirements

Preparing for Graduation from the English Education MAED Program

1. Plan of Study: Go to the Second Language Education Homepage click on Degree Programs, then click on Program Description to see a sample Plan of Study for the MAEd degree. You will need to make an appointment with your advisor (Dr. Kajder) to complete your own plan of study. Before submitting this form, you will need to name and obtain the signatures of two additional Education faculty members whom you wish to serve on your committee for your final exam in May. Your advisor will provide additional information about appropriate choices according to Graduate School guidelines. This plan of study must be completed and submitted to the Graduate School before you start your field placement. All the documents required for finishing your program will be submitted to Mrs. Nancy Nolen, War Memorial 110.

NOTE: The rest of the forms mentioned below can be found at http://www.grads.vt.edu/forms.

2. Course Justification Request Form: If you took graduate courses more than five years ago and wish to justify listing them on your POS form to use toward your MAEd, you must submit a Course Justification Request form. You will also need to have all three committee members sign this form prior to submitting it with your Vitae to the Graduate School.

3. Applying for Degree Form: By March 1, you must submit this form electronically to the Graduate School. If all your paperwork is not submitted on time, your name will not be listed in the graduation program, and/or your graduation may be delayed. If you still have one or two courses to take in the summer, you will still be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony, although your diploma will not be mailed and your graduation will not be official until your last required course is completed. The same deadlines apply even if you will not receive your diploma in May but you wish to walk in the ceremony.

4. Change to Plan of Study Form: When you and your advisor fill out the POS form, you will estimate the semesters that you will take certain required courses. Occasionally you will take courses at different times than are listed on the POS; this does NOT indicate the need for submitting a Change of Plan of Study form. This form is required only if you have substituted one course for another or if you have not taken every course listed on the original POS form you submitted to the Graduate School, with the approval of your advisor. In those cases, you need to submit the change of Plan of Study Form to the Graduate School by March 1, or the last day before Spring Break. This form also requires the signatures of your committee members.

5. Electronic Portfolio: The electronic portfolio serves as a final exam for the MAEd program. You begin to work on this portfolio during the first semester of the methods class, EDCI 5724: Teaching in Middle and Secondary Schools I, and finish it during the semester you take the second semester of the course, EDCI 5744. The goals and format for the portfolio are presented during class, but the actual production of the portfolio will be accomplished independently outside of class. Assistance may be scheduled in War Memorial 220; a schedule will be provided during the methods class.

6. Request to Take Final Exam Form: The electronic portfolio will be presented in War Memorial 220L on Monday, May 5, 2008. Since this is your final exam for the MAEd program, you must download the form and turn it in to Nancy Nolen by April 21 in order to be sure to have your card to admit you to the exam in a timely manner. When you present your portfolio to your three committee members, they will sign the card saying you have passed the exam provided your work is satisfactory. You will then make two copies of the exam card (one for yourself and one for Dr. Kajder). You will take the original to Mrs. Nolen.
