MA Curriculum and Instruction for Inservice Teachers
Program Description
Virginia Tech offers a secondary English Education Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The program is designed for practicing teachers who wish to engage in advanced study and/or complete National Board Certification. The program is designed to be flexible and support full-time teachers. Please contact Dr. Sara Kajder if you are interested in learning more about the program.
Curriculum
The Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction program can include coursework in educational foundations, English education pedagogy, literacy education, educating exceptional learners, instructional technology and cognate courses addressing from within the school of education or the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. In addition up to 6 hours of independent study can be arranged to help support the National Board Certification Process in English Education.
Admissions
Prospective students should apply to the Graduate School at Virginia Tech (it is easiest to apply online). A 3.00 GPA for regular admission status is required (last 60 hours of coursework). Three letters of reference that address your academic and professional abilities are required. Students should also submit a resume/CV that includes these points:
- Record of Professional Experience including teaching, counseling, publications, or other related professional activities
- Teaching and/or Professional Certificates held
- List of Academic Honors, Awards, Prizes, or other Recognition received
- Co-Curricular or Community Service Activities (in order of importance to candidate)
Admissions Essay Requirements
Please address the following question:
What is your personal philosophy of teaching and learning in your content area? How has your philosophy manifested itself in your practice over the years? What issues have you encountered in your content area that interest you? As a part of your response, please share the following: a) example(s) of a particularly difficult or challenging teaching scenario that you have experienced in your career, how you handled the situation, and what you learned from it; b) example(s) and explanation of what you would consider your greatest success(es) in your career as a teacher; and c) a description of your teaching "self" based on what you would imagine your students' perceptions of you to be.
GRE scores are NOT required but may be used to supplement the application. A TOEFL score of 550 on the paper version or 213 on the computerized version is required for international students as per University regulations. All international students who have not obtained baccalaureate degrees from an accredited Anglophone university are required to take the GRE and TOEFL examinations.
