Degree Programs

Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction (MAEd) in English Education
(with Postgraduate Professional Licensure in English, 6-12)

This program is designed for students interested in teaching middle or high school English, grades 6-12, who has successfully completed an undergraduate major in English.   The MAED in English Education is a 42-hour program, including 30 hours of graduate coursework (e.g., educational foundations, methods of teaching English, instructional technology, and English) and 12 hours of fieldwork (e.g., a 3-hour early field internship during the fall semester and a 9-hour student teaching internship during the spring semester).  The program also offers opportunities for additional endorsements in theatre and journalism for interested candidates.  Students admitted to the program are required to complete 9-12 hours of coursework before beginning the early field internship.  The program requires a minimum of 15-18 months to complete.  There is also a two-year option.

The program is NCATE approved and meets the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) guidelines. The Virginia Tech licensure program has reciprocity with 35 + states and/or territories.

Add-On Endorsements

Students completing the certification program in English Education can also attain endorsements in Journalism and Theater Arts.

Journalism:

  1. 15 semester hours of coursework as specified by the state of Virginia
  2. Educational portfolio evidence to show practical evidence in the area of journalism in an educational setting (e.g., the early field and student intern placement)

Theater Arts:

  1. 15 semester hours of coursework as specified by the state of Virginia
  2. Educational portfolio evidence to show practical evidence in the area of theater arts in an educational setting (e.g., the early field and student intern placement)
