Health Promotion

Principles of Community Health

Public health issues and concepts are analyzed and evaluated in relationship to existing principles.

Program Development in Health Education

Theory, trends, and design of community health education programs implemented in communities, health agencies, hospitals, and industry.

Public Health Administration

This course will focus on relevant and timely public health administration concepts. The major topics covered include: health policy, health care planning, health care economics, health law, and managerial functions as they relate to health care and public health settings.

Health Behavior & Health Education

This course has two main purposes: (1) to familiarize students with historical theoretical and methodological aspects of health psychology; and (2) to acquaint health education students with the social, psychological, and cultural determinants of health behaviors which form the underpinnings of health education practice.

Health of the Elderly

This course will focus on health issues affecting the elderly and the role of health promotion, specifically primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in addressing these issues. Issues range from medical problems affecting the elderly to health care related issues, such as, medicare and managed care. (Course is only offered once a year).

Evaluation of Health Promotion Programs

This course is designed to provide students with a background in order to develop and implement a sound evaluation of a health program. In addition to learning the fundamentals of health program evaluation students will produce a comprehensive evaluation written report. (Note: courses that may be substituted for this one include EDRE 5404 (Fnds. of Ed. Research & Eval.), SOC 5214 (Research Methods) or STAT 5605 (Biometry).

Epidemiology of Substance Abuse

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive examination of the epidemiology of substance abuse. Topics coved include pharmacology of drugs and psycho-social aspects. In addition to substance abuse content students will research a drug-related topic and produce both a comprehensive written paper and a presentation using presentation graphics.

Principles of Health Literacy

This course is designed to address concepts in health literacy. The course uses a primary care focus and perspective and covers health literacy concepts and definitions; creating a patient-friendly environment; assessing patients' health literacy levels; understanding and avoiding medical errors; factoring culture into the care process; improving patient-provider communication, designing easy-to-read patient education materials; principles for writing for low literacy; and using alternative forms of patient communication. Application of health literacy concepts to target groups other than patients will also be addressed.

Advanced Concepts in Health Promotion

This course is a content driven approach to facilitate a better understanding of the content framing most health promotion programs.  It will be overview in nature and will cover wellness concepts, mental health and stress, fitness, nutrition and weight management, healthy relationships, human sexuality, drug use and abuse,  cardiovascular health, cancer, infection and immunity, consumer health, and environmental health.  (This course is recommended as a first course for students with minimal health course work backgrounds.)

Instructional Technology

Principles of Instructional Design

Logical and empirical foundations for the selection of instructional events. Includes design, methodologies, principles, and instructional strategies.

Introduction to Computers (1 cr hr)
Graphic Design for Electronic Presentations (2 cr hr)

The overall goal of this module is to assist you in developing an informed view of graphics for presentations in educational or training situations.

Education Research

Foundations of Educational Research (EDRE 5404)

Research and evaluation in education with emphasis on development of skills requisite for utilizing research and evaluation studies in practical situations.

Sport Performance

Motor Skill Learning

This course examines the cognative and neuro-physiological processes underlying motor skill acquisition and performance. The process of this course is to take the material presented in the text and apply it to instructional activities in the physical education classroom or athletic environment.

Behavioral Aspects of Exercise and Sport

The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the theories and applications pertinent to sport and exercise psychology. This on-line version of the course utilizes a case study approach. The student will read each case and the applicable text material and then complete the case study form and submit that form to the instructor.

Mental Skills Training

This course focuses on developing fundamental mental skills training programs for athletes.
