Master's: Requirements
The Master's degree program includes a minimum of 30 semester credit hours. It may be completed in as few as one or as many as five years of graduate study. Requirements for a Master's degree include coursework and the successful defense of a professional portfolio.
The on-campus IDT program can prepare students for a variety of career options. Typical career paths include:
- Instructional designer/trainer
- Distance education/ e-learning specialist
- Multimedia developer
- School technology specialist
- Preparation for doctoral program
Although the IDT program provides a list of recommended courses for career options listed above, the specific courses that students take are up to the student and his or her advisor. Additional program options can be developed in consultation with your advisor.
Transfer Credit
Up to 6 semester hours of graduate credit can be transferred from another institution and counted toward the master's degree if approved by your advisor. See the Graduate Manual for exceptions for certain Virginia institutions.

Coursework Time Limit and Revalidation
Coursework must be completed within 5 years after approval of POS or revalidated if preliminary examination has not yet been completed.
Final Exam Portfolio Requirement
In lieu of a final Master's exam, Instructional Design and Technology students must complete a checklist of AECT indicators and a portfolio to showcases their skills and abilities.
