Reading Specialist Endorsement

The Reading Specialist Program at Virginia Tech is a Master’s Degree Program that prepares experienced teachers to earn endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia as Reading Specialists. This K-12 endorsement enables successful candidates to take positions in schools across the state. The program has received national recognition from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The program consists of eleven courses, organized into four program strands (i.e. Foundations, Research, Instruction and Assessment, Adolescent Literacy). Courses are taught by four full-time program faculty and the degree is usually completed within 2 years.

Currently, the reading specialist program enrolls students in both Roanoke and Blacksburg. Course offerings take place online and face-to-face and are scheduled to meet the needs of full-time, inservice teachers. To apply, go to the VT Graduate School Website: Deadlines are as follows: Fall-July 1st, Spring-Dec. 1st, Summer 2-June 1st. Prior to applying, please contact the Reading Program Coordinator, Heidi Anne Mesmer,, 540-231-8343

NEW: Beginning Summer 2015, the Reading Specialist program will move to a hybrid format. Courses will be offered online during Fall and Spring. During the summer required courses will take place during a two-week summer intensive on the Blacksburg campus.
