Congratulations, Mary Tackett!


March 31, 2016 – Mary Tackett, SOE graduate student in T&L, who was notified of her selection as Graduate Student of the Year. Mary Elizabeth Tackett is a doctoral candidate in education, curriculum and instruction. She earned her master's and education specialist degree in the same field and her bachelor's degree in English, all at Virginia Tech. She has nine peer-reviewed conference presentations, contributed to two books, and several of her manuscripts are currently under review. She is an experienced and dedicated teacher, tutor, and mentor whose enthusiasm for learning is contagious in every environment, whether it be in a first-grade classroom or in a university setting. Her work has been recognized with many awards, including but not limited to the Virginia Scholars Award, a Blue Ridge Writing Project Fellowship, YMCA Outstanding Graduate Volunteer of the Year, Outstanding Community Outreach, and Outstanding Graduate Student Leader. The co-chair of her dissertation committee describes her as "a standout in every way," and a person she came to "value and respect as a researcher, instructor, and colleague." According to a colleague, Mary is "steadfast in her beliefs about the importance of education, and the right of all students to be treated with dignity and respect. She exemplifies the words 'grace under pressure.'" Mary hopes to be remembered at Virginia Tech as someone who enthusiastically embraces every opportunity to enrich the lives of those she encounters through her unwavering dedication to equity, understanding, and appreciation of all individuals.
