Johanna Lasonen
Dr. Lasonen is a prominent and accomplished scholar in several emerging and critical aspects of education and worklife connections, vocational education and training, and in intercultural education. With scholars from across the globe she has authored essays and data-based studies on workplace learning practices and policies, workforce preparation systems and policies, program participation and the associated effects on and influences of gender, intercultural dimensions of education for work, the parity of esteem between academic and vocational education, and other topics. Her scholarship has generated important information about innovative programs and policies in Finland, as well as in other nations including developing and third world countries. Most importantly, she has authored studies comparing and contrasting the design and effects of educational initiatives on a regional (EU) and global scale. In recognition of her distinguished international scholar status, she served as the elected president of the International Vocational Education and Training Association in 1999-2000--a group of researchers and policy makers focused on studying and improving the education to work life transition process. More recently, Dr. Lasonon was selected as the first UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Education in Finland, which further affirmed the significance of her scholarship on education and training in and for the global economy. She earned her doctoral degree at Virginia Tech in 1990.
