Professional Education-Alternative Licensure:

Virginia Tech does not have an alternative licensure program at the Blacksburg nor the extended campus sites. However, we do offer courses that fulfill the Virginia Department of Education professional education requirements for individuals on a provisional license. Please know that any course that you take must be approved by the Virginia Department of Education, and that it remains your responsibility to confirm that the courses meet State requirements.

The Virginia Department of Education website (www.doe.virginia.gov) outlines all licensure requirements under “Teacher Education and Licensure.” You will be able to download the entire manual to explain the content and professional education requirements for your particular content area. In addition to course requirements, you must pass Praxis I or have passing SAT scores and pass Praxis II in your specific teaching area (if there is a Praxis II for your teaching area). Individuals seeking licensure in elementary education, special education, or reading specialist must also take the Virginia Reading Assessment to be licensed. Details on the testing requirements and passing scores can be found on our Center for Teacher Education website: www.soe.vt.edu/professionaled.

For elementary licensure, 18 semester hours of coursework are required. For secondary licensure, 15 semester hours are required. The professional education course requirements include:

  • Human Growth and Development, 3 semester hours
  • Social Foundations of Education, 3 semester hours
  • Curriculum and Instruction, 6 semester hours
  • Reading: for elementary licensure, 6 hours; for secondary, 3 hours in Reading in the Content Areas

Here at Virginia Tech, you may take courses to fulfill the requirements by first enrolling as a Commonwealth Campus student through the Graduate School (www.grads.vt.edu). You may take up to 12 hours using this designation, and petition for up to another 3 credits for a total of 15 hours. On your own you will need to enroll and complete your coursework, then have official transcripts sent to the VA Dept of Ed for acceptance. You are strongly encouraged to seek confirmation by the VA Dept of Ed that the course(s) is/are acceptable prior to enrolling for the course(s).

The specific VT courses that historically fulfill the licensure requirements are listed in a table on below. Contact information is also included. Please check the Timetable of Courses on the Hokie Spa (www.vt.edu) for course availability and format (e.g., face-to-face, web-based, interactive video conference) offered during a particular semester.
