Music Education (K-12)
Instrumental and Choral
Students interested in teaching music in public schools can enter the graduate
program leading to a master's degree and licensure. The Music Education option
with the Bachelor of Arts in Music is no longer accepting applicants. The most
important feature of the music education program is its emphasis on quality
above quantity. It is the Department of Music's philosophy that only the best
and most dedicated musicians should become music educators. Therefore, only
the best musicians and students are accepted. This standard keeps enrollment
small and instruction personal. Students are treated as individuals with their
own unique gifts and needs.

Technology Education
The undergraduate technology education program is being phased out and will
be replaced by a graduate licensure program. In Technology Education, students
apply knowledge, tools, and skills to solve practical problems. Students are posed
with technical problems and solve them by designing concrete solutions.
Sample course projects include designing and building a computer-controlled device,
and using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools to design or document an innovative
transportation device. Graduates of the Technology Education Program usually
teach middle school or high school courses such as Computer Aided Design, Communication
Technology, Electronics, Manufacturing, Construction, Design and Technology, Introduction
to Engineering, and Principles of Technology. Students earn Technology Education
teacher licensure for grades 6-12 and are highly employable in Virginia and throughout
the US due to the severe shortage of these teachers nationally. However,
some graduates use these technologies and skills to gain employment in a wide
range of other careers in business and industry. Technology Education
is a broad-based curriculum that is especially well suited to individuals who
enjoy working with people and technology.
Appropriate undergraduate majors eligible for this program are engineering
and architecture.
