Education-Scholarships:
Several teaching scholarships are available to Virginia Tech students.
All scholarships require a completed application. For all of the scholarships listed below, you must submit the School of Education application by March 2, 2009 to 106 War Memorial Hall combined with a financial aid application (Fafsa) to be submitted online to the Financial Aid office for consideration. Both applications are required for consideration! Please submit the on-line FAFSA application located at: www.fafsa.ed.gov by March 11, 2009 deadline!

Alice W. Johnson Endowed Scholarship in Science Education
To assist students who wish to pursue their career and licensure
in Science Education. Recipient shall be, at the time of receipt of the
scholarship funds, a rising senior or a graduate student accepted into
the VT Science Education program. First preference shall be given for
financial need, and secondly, scholastic achievement. Applications are

Hahn Memorial Teaching Scholarship is intended to encourage outstanding
students to consider a career in teaching. Supported by a pledge made
by former Tech President, Dr. T. Marshall Hahn, in memory of his late
son, the scholarship is awarded in the spring on a competitive basis to
a student at Tech who is seeking teacher licensure. SOE Application

The student must be making good progress toward degree/licensure requirements,
which usually means junior, senior, or graduate standing. Must have a
3.0 overall GPA. The deadline for application

Duncan Lyle Kinnear Scholarship
To assist students who wish to pursue their career and licensure in Science Education. Supported by a gift made by Mrs. Florence Kinnear, in memory of her husband Duncan L. Kinnear, a professor emeritus in the VT Department of Biology, known as the "Deacon." Eligible students must be accepted in the Science Education graduate program.Other criteria include financial need, demonstration of community or volunteer work with children related to teaching. Teach for Virginia®Student Loan Program
Launched for the first time in Virginia in 2005, Sallie Mae's Teach for Virginia and Care for Virginia student loan programs will again offer to repay, on behalf of eligible Virginia teachers and nurses, 10 percent of their original federal Stafford loan balances. In addition, Sallie Mae will waive all origination fees -- an additional 2 percent savings -- and borrowers will be eligible to earn an extra loan credit of up to 3.3 percent or interest rate reductions totaling up to 1.25 percentage points, depending on their lender.
Sallie Mae's Teach for Virginia and Care for Virginia student loans are low-cost Stafford loans backed by the federal government. Through a partnership with the state, nursing or teaching students at any Virginia college or university who take out Sallie Mae loans, make three years of regular, on-time payments and commit to work as teachers or nurses in the state for three years are eligible for the program.

Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program is an incentive program
for students interested in pursuing a teaching career in a critical shortage
teaching area. Awards are for $3,720 per year with $2,000 forgiven for
each year a recipient teaches in the public schools of Virginia.
Critical Virginia shortage teaching endorsement areas for 2008-09:
- Special Education
- speech-language disorders preK-12;
- special education general curriculum K-12 (learning disabilities; emotional disturbance; mentla retardation);
- early childhood special education (birth through age 5);
- special education adapted curriculum K-12 (severe disabilities);
- hearing impairments preK-12;
- visual impairments preK-12
- Mathematics (mathematics 6-12; Algebra I)
- Science (Earth science; middle grades 6-8; biology)
- Reading Specialist
- Foreign Language (Spanish preK-12)
- Career and Technical Education (family and consumer sciences; technology education)
- English as a Second Language preK-12
- English 6-12
- Library Media preK-12

Also
minority students enrolled in any teaching area are eligible. Academic
status in 2009-2010 must be junior, senior, or graduate level.
There is a state form and an agreement detailing the conditions of
the award that must be filled out and signed. Students should be nominated by the program area leader for an application. Applications should be available mid-March 2009.
Janet M. and James F. Johnson Teacher Education Endowed Scholarship
Awarded annually to a student enrolled in a teacher education program
in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Preference shall be
given to a rising junior or senior and based on both academic standing
and financial need. Recipients must be approved by the Financial Aid Office
as qualifying for financial assistance. Rising juniors or seniors in Early
Childhood, Technology Education, Marketing Education, Business Education,
Work and Family Studies, and Health and Physical Education may apply for

Janet M. Johnson Scholarship in Teacher Education Awarded annually
to a student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences
Teacher Education Program. Preference shall be given to students based
upon 1) financial need, 2) academic achievement, 3) extracurricular leadership,
4) community service, and 5) reside in the State of Virginia.Recipients
must be aproved by the Financial Aid Office as qualifying for financial
assistance. Application deadline is March 2, 2009. Three awards will be given for $1500.00 each.

Laura G. Heichel Memorial Scholarship is to assist a student in
an elementary education program during the final internship year. Supported
by a pledge from Gary L. Heichel in memory of his wife Laura, the scholarship
is intended to recognize a student who brings to the profession a love
of teaching and high quality academic achievement.
The student must be making good progress toward degree/licensure requirements,
which usually means junior, senior, or graduate standing. Must have a

James Madison Fellowship is a fellowship for students who are pursuing a Master's degree and wish to teach American History, American Government, or social studies in secondary schools (grades 7-12). The program enables students to master the contents of American constitutional history through study for a master's degree. Fellowships carry a maximum stipend of $24,000 for up to two years of full-time study for college graduates. The deadline for the application is March 2, 2009. James D. McComas Endowed Scholarship Fund. This award
is for undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing for a profession
in teaching or counseling in grades K-12 and have demonstrated financial
need. Recipients of this award shall be recommended by the Director of
the School of Education or his designee and selected by the University's
Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee. Recipients will be chosen on
the basis of financial need, special family circumstances or other extenuating
factors which would otherwise prevent the student from attending Virginia
Tech. Secondary consideration will be given on the basis of scholastic
achievement, good character and/or demonstrated leadership potential.

Dan B. Fleming Scholarship
To assist graduate students who wish to pursue their career and licensure in History and Social Science Education. Preference shall be given to students based upon 1) financial need, 2)academic achievement, 3)extracurricular leadership, and 4)community service. The deadline for application is March 12, 2009. Submit application to the
Office of Academic Programs, 106 War Memorial Hall. Two scholarships for $1000.00 each will be awarded.

Virginia Space Grant Consortium - Teacher Education Scholarship
Program
$1,000 awards given to students enrolled at a Virginia Space Grant university
in a track that leads to teacher certification.
Priority is given to those majoring in technology education, math education,
or earth/space/environmental science. Deadline - March 2, 2009. Mail
application packet directly to the VA Space Grant Consortium in Hampton,

Virginia Association for Teachers of English awards a $1000 scholarship to a student during one semester of student teaching. The awards are given in English 6-12 licensure, middle school (if one concentration is English), and elementary licensure to a candidate with a strong English language arts preparation. Information is available on the VATE website.
Marion A. and Annie Webster Williams School of Education Scholarship
To assist students who enroll in the School of Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Priority will be given to those who, for two years preceding their acceptance, have resided in Franklin, Patrick, Henry or Floyd County, Virginia. Students from Franklin will be give first priority, Patrick, second priority, Henry, third priority, and Floyd County fourth priority. If no student who applies is accepted into the School of Education from one or more of these areas, financial need will be another criterion for selection. Applications are due March 2, 2009. Two awards of $1250 each will be given.

Reba Julia Medler Scholarship Fund
To assist students who are enrolled or will be at the time of receipt of scholarship funds in a program to prepare them to teach special needs students K-12. Preference shall be given to students based upon (1) financial need, (2) community service and (3) academic achievement.
Applications are due March 2, 2009. One award for $900 will be given.

To assist students who are enrolled or will be at the time of receipt of scholarship funds in a School of Education degree program. Three awards for $3500 each.

Nevin R. Frantz, Jr. Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship
To assist graduate students focusing in the area of career and technical education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The scholarship will be given based on demonstrated excellence in research, teaching and service on the part of the active graduate student and consideration also given to financial need. Amount of these awards will vary.

Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship
Alpha Delta Kappa is an international sorority honoring outstanding female educators. Our sorority is of an altruistic nature. This spring the Alpha Omicron Chapter in Woodstock, VA would like to offer a $500 scholarship to a deserving student. The applicant must be a resident of Shenandoah County, Virginia.
