Crossing the Border Through Service Learning
- Are you having trouble getting into a Spanish class?
- Are you interested in a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Mexican or Honduran culture, but at this time you just don’t have the funds for a trip abroad?
- Have you been to a Spanish-speaking country, and now you are eager to be even more involved with native Spanish speakers?
- Does the thought of getting to know people from Mexico and Honduras on a personal one-to-one basis seem exciting?
- Are you intrigued by the thought of giving of your time and energy to that community in a grass roots program to help folks to reach their potential while at the same time they help you to reach yours?
- Are you interested in receiving college credit at the same time?
Crossing the Border through Service-Learning began in Spring 2001 and has run every semester since then. During that time, the program has grown exponentially. Below is a partial list of opportunities:
- Forming friendships with families
- Spending time each week in their homes
- Sharing typical meals and food
- Teaching English
- Helping them develop their computer skills
- Helping them with Auralog, their online language learning program
- Developing oral proficiency in Spanish
- Sharing cultures
- Helping with a Family Literacy Program
- Facilitating as families participate in an online English language learning program
- Tutoring families as they participate in an online high school equivalency program through the Mexican government (all the materials will be available online so the students can participate in learning as well as the families)
- Participating in service-learning
