Special Education: Program and Degrees:
Vocational Special Needs Add-On Endorsement

A 1998 DACUM study and statewide survey of transition coordinators in Virginia produced a list of transition coordinator competencies. These competencies frame the personnel preparation program in career transition & vocational special needs at Virginia Tech.

This vocational special needs endorsement is available to individuals with a teaching license in vocational education, special education or a related area. There are multiple avenues for acquiring the endorsement by completing coursework in Virginia Techs approved program (12 semester hours and work experience).

Course Sequence

The following courses and work experience meet the requirements for the state approved add-on endorsement in Vocational Special Needs:

EDCI 5474 Adapting Curriculum & Instruction for Individuals with Disabilities 3 credits
EDVT 5734 Transition Programming for Individuals with Disabilities 3 credits
EDVT 5684 Education & Employment of Diverse Populations 3 credits

AND

  4,000 clock hours of documented work experience OR  
EDVT 5754
OR
EDVT 4274
Internship
OR
Internship in Business
3 credits

Avenues to the Endorsement

The Vocational Special Needs Add-On Endorsement may be obtained through 12 hours of coursework and work experience as detailed in the previous section. The endorsement may be achieved in one of the following manners:

  • Partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in Education with a special education concentration
  • Partial fulfillment of requirements for Master of Science or Bachelor of Science degrees in Vocational & Technical Education
  • Successful completion of 12 hours of approved program coursework and work experience as non-degree seeking student
