School of Education

Director's Welcome

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Susan G. Magliaro

Good things are happening here at the Virginia Tech School of Education! We became official on July 1, 2005. Our new structure includes two major units: the Office of Academic Programs, and the Office of Educational Research and Outreach. These two offices will provide a range of services related to research, teaching and outreach that support faculty, staff, students, and our K-12 partners. Our academic units have morphed into Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Learning Sciences and Technologies, and Teaching and Learning. Another new addition has been our Center of Research and Development in International Education (CRaDIE).

In addition to our new structures, we welcomed eight new faculty members in August, 2005, and we are searching for nine new faculty members during this academic year. The fact that we are essentially increasing our staff by over 25 % during these developing years is a clear sign of the University’s support for education at Virginia Tech. Moreover, we are now being staffed to the level that we need to meet our goal of becoming an international leader in research, teaching, and high-impact outreach.

As we continue to refine our vision and goals for the future, we remain steadfast to our land-grant tradition. We are striving to embed inquiry, leadership, and advocacy in our research, teaching, and outreach. Education is foundational to every aspect of the lives of our constituents – we respect and honor that fact, and as we continue to evolve into the School of Education for the 21st century, we will remember our roots.

As I have done earlier, I close with an invitation to stay in touch with us and continue to participate in all activities that contribute to our mission and future success. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Susan G. Magliaro, Ed.D.
