Admission Requirements

All students must make application to the university through the Graduate School.

For admission to the master's program the applicant must:

  • Submit an application completed through the Graduate School (including application fee).
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; the MS teacher licensure concentration requires a bachelor's degree related to the CTE endorsement area for which license is sought.
  • Submit two official transcripts of all undergraduate work:

  • Have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work for regular admission status or 2.5 GPA to 2.99 GPA for provisional admission status.
  • Have career goals consistent with the degree offered by CTE.
  • Demonstrate commitment to time requirements of the CTE program.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
  • If in the teaching licensure concentration, submit a passing score for Praxis Core assessment test at least by the end of the first semester enrolled.

For admission to the education specialist program the applicant must:

  • Submit an application completed through the Graduate School (including application fee).
  • Submit a Career and Technical Education application to the CTE Graduate Coordinator (CTE Education Specialist Application Package).
  • Possess, or be currently enrolled in, a master's degree in career and technical education or a related area. Candidates not possessing the master's degree must be within 6 semester hours of completing all degree requirements. Acceptance into the program requires a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Submit two official transcripts of all undergraduate work:

  • Have appropriate educational and/or work experience.
  • Participate in an admissions interview with a CTE faculty committee.
  • Have a career goal compatible with the mission of the CTE program.
  • Demonstrate commitment to time requirements of the education specialist degree.
  • Document a minimum of 5 years of successful experience in the field of secondary, post secondary, college/university, or adult/continuing education (e.g., public, private, governmental, military, business and/or industry).

For admission to the doctoral program the applicant must:

  • A master’s degree awarded by an accredited college or university (minimum 3.0 GPA).
  • Submitted scores on the GRE exam for the Ph.D. degree (not required for the Ed.D. degree).
  • A record of prior successful educational achievement and future potential for graduate study at the doctoral level as evidenced by transcripts and three letters of recommendation.
  • A stated career goal of becoming a teacher educator in the field of career and technical education or a professor at a small college/university related to the content of a given CTE program area
  • A demonstrated record of past experience related to the individual's career goal (Note: Applicants with a teacher education career goal must have at least two years of teaching experience at the secondary level and/or community college level in one of the fields included in CTE.) Applicants with a collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, technical professional, or equivalent teaching license in a CTE field is preferred. Provisional or alternative licenses are not equivalent.
  • Clear evidence of potential for the development of superior communication skills in the areas of listening, writing, and speaking.
  • Recommendations for admission by a two-person interview team.
