Carol A. Mullen, Ph.D.

Carol A. Mullen, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Leadership at Virginia Tech.
 
Dr. Mullen is a U.S. Fulbright Award who conducted work in China and has a book coming out with Routledge in 2017. She is also Plenary Session Representative to the University Council for Educational Administration. She was honored with the 2015
Educational Administration Quarterly Service Award for Outstanding Editorial Board Service (UCEA journal; Sage Publications). She served as the 67th President of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) from 2012 to 2013. Previously, she chaired the Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies Department in the School of Education at the University of North Carlina at Greensboro.

Dr. Mullen specializes in mentoring theory and practice in education across university and K–12 settings and social justice leadership that fosters critically

reflective, values-oriented approaches to developing education professionals and systems.

For 8 years she was editor of the Mentoring & Tutoring: Partnership in Learning journal (Routledge/Taylor & Francis/NCPEA). Her authorships encompass more than 200 refereed journal articles and book chapters, 16 special issues of journals, and 16 books. Recent books include the coedited volume The SAGE Handbook of Mentoring and Coaching in Education (SAGE 2012); the coauthored book Educational Leadership at 2050: Conjectures, Challenges, and Promises (Rowman & Littlefield Education, 2012), and From Student to Professor: Translating a Graduate Degree into a Career in Academia (R&L Education, 2012).

Awards for scholarship include AERA’s Award for Breaking the Circle of One, a University 

President’s award for faculty excellence, a women’s leadership award, and doctoral mentoring and teaching awards. She has founded, coordinated, and researched numerous mentoring and writing programs for professional associations and universities. Her doctorate is from The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, Canada.
 

   

Carol Mullen is installed as the 2012-2013 NCPEA President on August 9, 2012 in Kansas City as she receives the gavel from past President Fen English.
