M. David Alexander

Ed.D.


M. David Alexander is a professor of education specializing in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. He earned an Ed.D in Educational Administration from Indiana University. To date he has authored or coauthored more than 65 articles, books, and book chapters. He has also contributed greatly to the field by presenting at many national and international conferences.

In addition to being actively involved in research, he also engages in extensive consulting activities for local, state, and national school systems. He has served as expert consultant and chairman for a number of school boards and expert witness in multiple court cases regarding education. He also engages in other professional and service activities. Currently, he is a member of the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society, Australian-New Zealand Education Law Association, and South African Education Law Association. He has also held leadership positions in the National Council for Professor of Educational Administration, the Education Law Association, to name just a few.

Finally, he has been recognized for his contributions to educational leadership. Recently, he received the honor of being named Evaluator for Distance Education Programme, Bacclareus Educationis from University of Pretoria in South Africa in 2011. M. David Alexander's contributions through teaching, research, and service enrich the Virginia Tech School of Education community.

School law, School finance, School board policy

Research interests include school law, school finance, and school board policy. Recent research publications, such as the eighth edition of his book, American Public School Law, further a strong line of inquiry, as well as demonstrate contributions to the field. Additional scholarship includes chapters in the School Discipline and Safety, The Principal and the Law, and Best Practices, Best Thinking, and Emerging Issues in School Leadership. His involvement in grant-funded projects also exemplifies commitment to the field. He has been an author and principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on several federally funded grants, such as the Fulbright-Hays Study Abroad Program, U.S. Department of Education, which focused on curriculum development for the People's Republic of China.
