Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction (MAEd) with a Concentration in English as a Second Language and Multicultural Education

The Masters in Education (MAEd) with a concentration in English as a Second Language (ESL) education consists of 30-45 credits that also meet requirements for licensure to teach in Virginia. The program typically requires 15-18 months of study and includes field experiences in schools. This Master’s degree may serve as preparation for: 

  • An MA with licensure to teach pre-K-12.
  • An MA without licensure (practicing teachers only).

 


Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in English as a Second Language and Multicultural Teacher Education

This doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction is intended to prepare experienced teachers (minimum 3 years) to assume leadership roles in the field of ESL and multicultural education. The plan of study is designed by the advisor and the student in order to meet the student’s needs and future goals. GRE test scores must be submitted to the Graduate School by all persons who are applying to begin any Ph.D. program in the School of Education.

 


Add-On Endorsement

Endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL) education requires 24 credit hours of coursework, some of which may have been already completed during initial licensure. Practicing teachers and current students pursuing licensure in other content areas are eligible for this option. Current SOE students pursuing licensure in another content area must work with English Language Learners (ELLs) during at least one class period each day that they are in the schools for both their Field Studies and Student Teaching.
