New Faculty

Director Susan Magliaro is pleased to announce the appointment of

Ms. Kathryn Beard, Career and Technical Education, joins the School of Education from Virginia Western Community College and Roanoke County Schools serving as Dual Enrollment Instructor, Teacher, and Cooperative Education Coordinator. She is completing her Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. Her research interests are in Leadership, Foundation and Policy, and Career and Technical Education. Ms. Beard is the recipient of the Golden Apple Award, Roanoke County Schools, 2006.

Dr. Carol B. Brandt, Assistance Professor, Foundations of Education, joins the School of Education from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Informal Learning and Schools (CILS). Her research focused on the metalinguistic features of talk among parents, children, and docents in successive visits to the museum. She completed her Ph.D. in Educational Thought and Sociocultural Studies at the University of New Mexico in 2005. Her research interests include structures of participation and literacy practices in classroom and informal contexts and science education for linguistically diverse, low- income communities. Other research interests are qualitative research methods and the use of digital technology for teaching and research.

Dr. James R. Craig, Visiting Professor, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, comes to the School of Education from Charleston, West Virginia where he served as the Director of Research, at Edvantia, Inc. (formerly the Appalachia Educational Laboratory). Dr. Craig completed his Ph.D. in Psychology with a minor in Statistics and Experimental Design in Education.

Dr. Theodore B. Creighton, Professor, Education Leadership, joins the School of Education from Sam Houston State University in Texas, where he served as Director, Center for Research and Doctoral Studies in Educational Leadership and Professor, Educational Leadership in the College of Education. He has held many other positions which include Vice-Principal, Principal, and District Superintendent of Schools. He completed his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Creighton has written and edited many books surrounding the topic of education administration and leadership. In March 2006, Dr. Creighton served as a keynote speaker for the California Professors of Educational Administration in Sacramento.

Dr. Susan Myers, Assessment and Evaluation, joins the School of Education from the Rappahannock County Public Schools in Washington, Virginia serving as director of special services. She earned her Ph.D. in Special Education Administration with a sub-focus in Policy Studies and Policy Analysis from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Meyer’s specific research interest is in the provision of viable programs for students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders.

Dr. Kelly A. Parkes, Assistant Professor, Music Education, joins the School of Education. Dr. Parkes has been researching and teaching in the United States for six years. Prior to moving to the USA she lectured in pre-college and college trumpet for 5 years at the Canberra School of Music; Institute of the Arts, and coordinated ensembles as well as Pre-college training programs. Dr. Parkes worked with public and private instrumental music programs within school music curricular at elementary, middle, and high school levels for ten years in Canberra, Australia. She also enjoyed extensive studio and classroom teaching, instrumental instruction, and band directing. In addition to her teaching, she was also the Principal trumpet of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra from 1996-2000. Since moving to the USA she has appeared as a regular substitute with the New World Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson-Thomas ( Miami, FL) and has worked as both adjunct professor and visiting professor with Florida International University. She is currently the Pedagogical advisor for the Australian Trumpet Guild, and a member of the ATG steering committee the International Trumpet Guild Conference, 2010.

Dr. Wayne Tripp, Educational Leadership, comes to the School of Education from the City of Salem School Division where he served as Superintendent of Schools and Roanoke Valley Regional Special Education Program, Superintendent. He completed his Ed.D. in Educational Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Tripp has engaged in specialty training at the National Academy for Superintendents at Ohio State University and Oxford University.

Mr. Boyce D. Durr, English Education, comes to the School of Education from Queens College – City University of New York (CUNY) where he served in as a professor teaching various graduate courses and supervisor of student teachers. He is completing his Ph.D. in English Education at New York University in New York City.

Mr. James A. (Jim) Egenrieder, Science Education, Northern Virginia, joins the School of Education from Arlington Public Schools serving as Teacher for Adult Education, H-B Woodlawn Program and several others. He completed his Master’s in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Falls Church, Virginia. Mr. Egenrieder is professionally licensed in biology/life science and agricultural education.

Dr. John Eller, III, Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership, comes to the School of Education from Southwest State University in Minnesota where he was Associate Professor in Educator Development and Leadership and Department Chair for Teacher Center Coordinator. While in this position, Dr. Eller completed his Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision: Leadership and Policy Studies, Organizational Behavior in 2004.

Dr. Brett D. Jones, Assistant Professor, Assessment and Evaluation, joins the School of Education from the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, where he served as Assistant Professor responsible for research, teaching, and service. He completed his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Jones research interests involve the application of cognitive science to teaching and learning, examining the effects of high stakes tests, and potential causes of the achievement gap in standardized test scores. Other research interest includes technology in the classroom to enhance student learning and motivation. He was selected as the distinguished university-wide Teacher of the Year at the University of Florida.

Dr. Simone F. Lambert, Assistant Professor, Counselor Education, comes to the School of Education to join us full-time at Virginia Tech. She previously served as an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech teaching Master’s level courses in the counseling Program. Dr. Lambert has been counseling in private practice as an independent contractor in Fairfax, Virginia since 2003. She completed her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Lambert continues to perform research with The National Play Therapy in counseling Practices Project.
