Master’s of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (MAEd)

with Postgraduate Professional Licensure in Music (Choral or Instrumental) Grades K-12

This year of study is designed for students interested in teaching elementary, middle or high school music, who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in music. The MAED is a 33 credit-hour program, including 19 hours of graduate coursework (e.g., educational foundations, methods of teaching, instructional technology, and education psychology) and 12 hours of fieldwork (in the form of a 3-credit early field internship during the fall semester and a 9 credit student teaching internship during the spring semester). The program also offers opportunities for dual endorsements in both Choral and Instrumental tracks, however, only for qualified candidates. This program is competitive and spaces are limited.

The program is NCATE approved and meets the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) guidelines. The Virginia Tech licensure program has reciprocity with 35 + states and/or territories.

Master’s in Education - Curriculum and Instruction (MAEd)

Students

This course is designed for practicing teachers currently in the field who already hold an undergraduate degree. The MAED is a 30-hour degree plan for the practicing music teacher. Eighteen hours of professional education courses are included in the concentration and cognate areas of the program. These studies are complimented by twelve hours in education foundations and research. Classes are offered during the summer, fall, and spring semesters and may be taken either full- or part-time.

Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction

The doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction is intended to prepare experienced teachers (minimum 3 years) for positions as curriculum specialists at the local, state, regional and/or national level, and/or lead teachers in secondary schools. Successful applicants must have a master’s degree from an accredited university in Education or a closely related field. The plan of study is designed by the advisor and the student in order to meet the student’s needs and future goals.
